PlanetBox 503X05XA Review by Nicole (Ohio, USA)
I bought this for my first grade daughter and have had it several months now. It is expensive, but I am planning on this being her lunch box for the rest of elementary school (through 8th grade). It is very durable, extremely easy to clean, and holds enough food that my daughter eats the rest of her lunch for her snack after school. She is not a huge eater, but because she always has plenty left over, I assume it would hold enough for a big eater. Also, I use either the large round container or a baggie to pack her snack and put that in the outside pocket as well.
Also, since time is an issuewhen eating lunch, I LOVE that she simply sits down and opens the lid and is ready to eat, nothing to open really. She can also eat several different things at once since they are all there. Finally when it is time to clean up, there isn't anything to throw away, just close the lid, lock it, and zip the bag and off you go.
Can't say enough about it.
PlanetBox 503X05XA Review by madievb
Great quality, excellent idea. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because the compartments are too shallow, as a result doesn't fit much food even for a child. I usually have to pack extra food on the front pocket. My kids made their friends jealous at school when they saw the new lunch box. Despite the shallowness, I still recommend it, just put more food on the front pocket and it will be fine.
PlanetBox 503X05XA Review by joc (Berkeley, CA United States)
We adore our planet box complete set. I struggled for a while with the cost but then realized that it is actually a great deal if you do the math. We wanted to use an alternative to plastic, even BPA-free plastic since you never know what else will turn up as a hazardous material. Glass is out of the question by request of the preschool and it can be heavy if it is tempered. So that left stainless steel. If you are getting high quality stainless steel for food storage, you will end up paying upwards around $45 to get enough boxes for a complete meal (1 for main course, 1 for fruit, 1 for side dish/snacks, etc.) and then you also need to buy a lunchbag to carry it in, which will set you back another $15 too. But for the PlanetBox, not only are you getting the bento lunchbox that has perfect compartment sizes for correctly portioned lunches, but you also get a really well-designed carry bag AND 2 stainless steel containers for wet things (1 for a wet main dish and 1 small one for dip/dressing). So really, it is an excellent bargain! Ok, now that we got the price out of the way, let me tell you what I love about this lunchbox:
1. Longevity and durability. I have a 3 y.o. and this lunchbox will last him many years. It is a high quality stainless steel that will last forever. It doesn't feel too big right now and yet he won't grow out of it portion-wise until at least after elementary school. Right now we don't pack it totally full and sometimes use the long compartment to put a napkin and utensil instead of food since he already gets snacks provided by the preschool. When we go out for a full day, we will pack it more full so he has all his snacks as well as his full lunch in there. Also, can pack more by using the "big dipper" (large, round container) separately and putting it in the front pouch.
2. Easy enough for a 3 y.o. to use independently. He can open it entirely by himself very easily and he loves seeing all his food in front of him as he eats. The preschool is really appreciative that they don't have to help him open a bunch of containers and it is all one piece so they don't have to match lids to containers once they are opened.
3. Encourages a well-balanced meal. We can see everything at once and make sure that the lunch as a whole is healthy and nothing is missing. Also, only one piece means only one item to wash at the end of the day!
4. The bag has an external pouch for water and a velcro pouch for additional snack or utensils. We like to encourage our son to drink enough water throughout the day so having it on the outside of the lunchbag makes it easy to pull it out and offer him a drink. Also, he sees his water bottle and visually is reminded to drink. He will glance at his lunchbag and say, "I want some water" and pull his bottle out himself.
5. The magnets are really cute and modern. My son loves the magnets! It makes the lunchbox look a little less "army" style and the designs are fantastic. Then, every year I can just freshen up his lunchbox with new magnets (they cost very little and you can buy them directly from planetbox.com) and maybe a new carry bag if his has gotten worn.
Overall, I feel like there were no corners cut in the design and manufacture of this product. Everything is of the best quality. I felt good buying it and I am very happy with the product. We use it EVERYDAY and get lots of people asking us about the planetbox when we are out and about. My son specifically asks for it as his lunchbox to take to school. The only thing that is not a criticism but just a fact to be aware of is that when the lunchbox is full of food and you put a water bottle full of water in the pouch, it is a bit heavy for a 3 y.o. He prefers not to carry it himself when it is full. I think it is not a bad thing since clearly high quality stainless steel needs to be heavier than cheap aluminum. Plus, he can work on his arm strength. =) He can carry it just fine coming home from school since it is usually empty.
Regarding the portion size, I am thinking of getting one for myself or even my husband to take to work. It isn't enough for a "hungry-man's lunch" but it is big enough for an adult that is trying not to over eat. You can fit a full sandwich in the main compartment. If you use the big dipper separately to carry more food, I think that is plenty for an adult's lunch. Another way the lunchbox can pay for itself - if you pack a lunch instead of going out every day!
